Vendors vs. Business Associates

Updated: Jun 16

Vendors are persons or entities the Covered Entity does business with, that are not members of the Covered Entity’s workforce, which activities do or do not involve uses or disclosures of Protected Health Information (PHI). Vendors can also be referred to as Business Associates.

Business Associates (BAs) are persons or entities the Covered Entity does business with, that are not members of the Covered Entity’s workforce, which activities do or do not involve uses or disclosures of Protected Health Information (PHI). If the activities of a Business Associate do not involve uses or disclosures of Protected Health Information (PHI), a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) is not required.

The terms Vendors and Business Associates can be interchangeable.
